2009 Walk for Hunger Official Video

Welcomed by Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino, 44,000 people came to the Boston Common to raise millions for the hungry during Project Breads annual Walk for Hunger. The 20-mile pledge Walk attracted over 1,000 religious organizations, as well as 1,200 corporate teams, 1,200 schools, and 700 friends and family groups. These Walkers and their sponsors raised $3.8 million to provide food for 400 emergency food programs in 128 Massachusetts cities and towns. The funds will provide a hot meal or a bag of groceries for out-of-work families next winter.

Mayor Menino Announcement

Watch the Mayor's speech.

"Together, we've made our city greener, our streets safer, our schools better and housing more available. Yet for a city - for a mayor - a record may be something to run on, but it's not something to run for. It's the vision, the dream, the confidence that things can be even better that keeps us at our tasks."

Mayor Thomas M. Menino 4/22/09

NECN: Affairs of State

(NECN: Boston, Mass.) - Boston Mayor Tom Menino says he is the right choice to lead the city through this recession. Last night, he announced that he'll seek a fifth full term as mayor.

Menino has been in office for 16 years. He is on track to be the longest-ever serving mayor when this term ends in December.

Yesterday, his opponents reacted by saying that it is time for a change in leadership. All three requested debates, which the mayor has typically resisted.

Joining NECN with more on the challenges and challengers Menino will face is Dr. Maurice Cunningham of the University of Massachusetts at Boston.
