Boston - With new media leader Digitas as the backdrop, Mayor Thomas M. Menino today announced his plans to seek re-election as Mayor of Boston. Joined by family, friends and members of the online media company’s workforce, Mayor Menino officially made his intentions clear.

“Together, we've made our city greener, our streets safer, our schools better and housing more available,” Mayor Menino said.  “Yet for a city - for a mayor - a record may be something to run on, but it's not something to run for. It's the vision, the dream, the confidence that things can be even better that keeps us at our tasks.”

Calling on young people in Boston to get more involved in government, Mayor Menino said, “Boston can be your proving ground and home to a wave of municipal innovation not seen since cities first brought water into people's homes.”

As part of the Mayor’s announcement, his re-election committee unveiled a new website, www.MayorMenino.com, and Facebook page, which allow visitors to learn more about Mayor Menino’s leadership and vision for Boston and feature tools for volunteers to get involved in the the campaign.  Individuals will also be able to keep track of developments through the campaign’s Twitter feed.

Mayor Menino concluded, “To all of you, I will renew the promise I make every morning when the sun rises over Hyde Park. I will work tirelessly for you and the special place we all call home.  It's a privilege to work for you.  I look forward to working for your vote, and debating our city's future.”

After his announcement, the Mayor will greet and thank supporters at two neighborhood rallies, beginning at Annunciation Hall in Roslindale, followed by Hibernian Hall in Roxbury.

Serving as the Chief Executive of The City of Boston since 1993, Mayor Thomas M. Menino has a proven track record of success. Under Mayor Menino’s stewardship, Boston has emerged as a national leader on issues from education reform to fighting gun violence; from neighborhood revitalization to environmental stability; and as a progressive hallmark that has battled to break down the walls of discrimination for all. A life-long resident of Hyde Park, Mayor Menino and his wife Angela still call the neighborhood home.

Mayor Menino was introduced at his announcement by Carol Fulp, Vice President of Community Relations, Sponsorship and Event Marketing at John Hancock Financial.  Carol Fulp oversees John Hancock’s corporate philanthropy as well as national marketing sponsorship units.  Carol is also an instrumental force in John Hancock’s partnership with Mayor Menino and the City of Boston to provide summer jobs for the city’s youth.  Her prior experience includes Community Programming and Human Resources Director for Boston’s ABC-TV affiliate WCVB as well as Employee Relations Manager for the Gillette Company.
